The city of Utrecht is famous for its historical town centre. However, it also boasts many modern architectural sites by well-known architects such as Rietveld and Rem Koolhaas. Many of these contemporary buildings are situated in the inner city, where the medieval structure and surrounding buildings had to be taken into account during the design and building process. Recent extentions to the eastern en western side of Utrecht (De Uithof and VINEX Leidsche Rijn) accommodated a further number of architectural highlights. Throughout the year, Aorta, the Utrecht Centre for Architecture, organises guided tours to (modern) architectural sites and landscape architecture in Utrecht . These excursions are concentrated around several subjects and locations.

Tour I: Architecture in 'De Uithof'
A visit to several leading modern buildings on university campus De Uithof. Building in De Uithof started in the 1960's but came to a halt in the following decade. However, in the past ten years building has been resumed with much enthusiasm, turning De Uithof into an actual campus. The new building impulse has resulted in several remarkable buildings. You will be guided around one or more of the following buildings in the De Uithof complex, depending on which day of the week the tour takes place: the Educatorium by Rem Koolhaas/OMA (1997), the Minnaert-building by Neutelings Riedijk Architecten (1997), the faculty for Economy and Management by Mecanoo (1995) and the University Library by Wiel Arets (2004).

This excursion also emphasizes the urban structure of De Uithof, the urban development plan of which was designed by Art Zaaijer/OMA (1986) in answer to the existing structure, which hardly took into account the original landscape formed by the Hollandse Waterlinie, the famous Dutch water defence system. The buildings erected in the so-called 'kasbah-zone' illustrate the urban development master plan. The landscape structure is designed by West 8. The tour visits the NMR-building by Ben van Berkel, UN Studio's (2001), the glossy Basketbar by NL Partners (Rietveld Prize 2003). On request, several other buildings can be viewed from the outside, such as the student housing by Uytenhaak (1999), the Ronald McDonald House by Bosch Haslett (1999) and the temporary student housing in the form of colourful stackable containers (Sky Boxes, 2004).

Time of departure: 18.00 hrs.
Duration: circa 2 hrs.
Point of departure: reception Educatorium (Address: Leuvenlaan 19)

Tour II: Rietveld and contemporaries (via Aorta)
Wilhelmina Park and the streets surrounding it feature many remarkable buildings. During this walking tour you will visit predominantly buildings designed by Gerrit Rietveld, such as the Rietveld-Schröder house (1924), the renovated apartment blocks across the street along Erasmuslaan (1931-34) and the chauffeur's residence (1927). The tour also includes designs of contemporary architects, for example S. Ravesteyn's private residence (1934) and the park pavilion. This pavilion belongs to the Amsterdam School but has a very romantic, rural feel to it.

Around the park several other examples of the Amsterdam School can be seen, as well as a row of recent, very modern villa's, amongst which the Dubble house (MVRDV/Mastenbroek). It is a great opportunity to compare Rietveld's architecture with that of his contemporaries and to judge the extent of his influence on architecture from later periods.

Time of departure : 18.30 hrs
Duration: circa 1,5 hrs.
Point of departure: Rietveld-Schröderhuis (Address: Prins Hendriklaan 50)

NOTE: This excursion does not include a tour of the interior of the Rietveld-Schröder house.
The Rietveld-Schröder house can be visited prior to or after the walking tour. We recommend that you book in advance. For reservations call the Central Museum : +31 (0)30 2362362.

Tour III: Museums and the museum quarter
The main theme of this walking tour is contemporary architecture in the very peaceful southern part of the inner city, the so-called museum quarter. By combining funds from the EU with the input of inhabitants, entrepreneurs, museums, cultural organisations and private investors, the local government has cast a new light on the cultural heritage of this area. Part of the project was the restoration of the unique wharf cellars, the refurbishment of the Old Canal and the opening up of many hidden courtyards and almshouses.

Attention will also be paid to modern extensions of museums and art galleries, as for example the extension of the University Museum by Koen van Velsen, the extension and re-routing of the Catharijneconvent museum by Hubert Jan Henket, the Central Museum (Beel en Achtergael) and the restoration of former 16th century city rampart (now an observatory) Sonnenburg. This tour will also focus on the issue of new developments in a historical city with monuments and urban conservation area's, illustrated by the domestic residence of architect Robert van den Hout (winner of the Rietveld Prize 2001), and the apartments in the former church of St. Martin.

Time of departure:
19.00 hrs.
Duration: circa 1.5 hrs.
Point of departure: Aorta, Centre for Architecture (Address: Achter de dom 14)

Tour IV: Contemporary architecture in the inner city
This guided tour focuses on 20th century architecture in the city centre of Utrecht . The route links up projects of architects who made a prominent contribution to the architecture in Utrecht , such as Mart van Schijndel, well-known projects by Sluijmer & Van Leeuwen like the metal house built on the smallest plot in Utrecht .

The tour will also visit an apartment building by Belgian architect Bob van Reeth, which is especially designed to fit the historical situation, a church yard, and incorporates the archaeological finds dating from the medieval period. During the tour the focus will be on the refurbishment plans of West 8 for Neude square and surrounding buildings such as the Neude tower (H.A. Maaskant, 1960), the main post office (J. Crouwel, 1924), the town hall (Enric Miralles, 2000) and the municipal theatre by W.M. Dudok (1941).

Time of departure: 19.00 hrs.
Duration : circa 1.5 hrs.
Point of departure: Aorta, Centre for Architecture (Address: Achter de dom 14)

Tour V: Jugendstil / art nouveau in Utrecht
This tour will explore art nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture in Utrecht . The elegant shapes of art nouveau (1890-1914) are visible all over Europe . From the entrances to the Paris Underground, the Eiffel Tower , the Folies Bergère posters and the Moulin Rouge to Grand Café's in Brussels , Prague and Victor Horta's residences in Brussels . This international style features many regional differences. Some architects had great difficulties letting go of the ecclesiastical styles of the 19th century. In Utrecht this resulted in a typical mix of neo-gothic and art nouveau architecture.

Art nouveau architects used a lot of modern materials, for example iron-cast beams and industrially produced windowpanes. This made the style very useful for buildings with large windows, such as warehouses, pharmacies, clothing stores etc. What's typical for Dutch art nouveau architecture is the use of glazed bricks in a variety of colours, making up tiled (symbolic) images relating to the purpose of the building.

Time of departure: 19.00 hrs.
